Mariners stay alive in playoff chase
By beating Houston 3-2 Wednesday at T-Mobile Park, Seattle kept its American League playoff hopes alive with four games to play.
The Mariners (25-31) trail the Astros (28-28) by three games for second place (and a playoff spot) in the A.L. West Division. The Los Angeles Angels (26-31) also won Wednesday, and they remain 2 1/2 games behind Houston. Both teams trail Toronto (29-27) for the second A.L. wild-card spot.
The Mariners play division-winning Oakland in the next four games at Oakland. The teams play at 6:40 p.m. Friday with Yusei Kikuchi pitching for Seattle opposite Chris Bassitt.
The Astros play four games at Texas. The Angels have three games left at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ty France had an RBI double and RBI single, and Kyle Seager also had an RBI double — all off Zack Greinke.
The Astros scored two ninth-inning runs on Josh Reddick's single. A George Springer single put the tying run in scoring position, but Yoshihisa Hirano struck out Jose Altuve to end the game.
Nick Margevicius allowed three hits and struck out four and walked three in six innings for the win.
