PMG FILE PHOTO - Oregon State linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr., a senior who would have been eligible to play next season, has instead opted to head to the NFL.College basketball — As we learned last week when UCLA's visit to Oregon was scuttled hours before tipoff because of a positive COVID-19 test for one of the three officials assigned to call the game, this college basketball season is going to be about adapting on the go.

The Bruins and Ducks are two of the teams expected to battle for the Pac-12 men's basketball title, but, as of this writing, it was not certain if or when the game can be rescheduled.

If the "all clear" is given, conference play for the Oregon Pac-12 schools and for Portland and Portland State is scheduled to hit full swing beginning this week.

In men's basketball, Oregon is 6-1 and 1-0 in conference. Oregon State is 4-3 (0-1 Pac-12) after holding off Portland State on Dec. 22. The Bay Area schools visit the Willamette Valley on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2.

In women's basketball, the Oregon State program suspended operations Dec. 20 because of a positive COVID-19 case. No. 7/8 Oregon survived its first real test in a four-point win at Washington State Dec. 21, and — if everyone returns from Christmas break healthy — will begin a challenging two-week stretch at home against USC on Jan. 1, a run that is scheduled to include games against top-10 foes UCLA, Arizona and top-ranked Stanford.

The WCC opener at Pacific for the Portland men has been postponed. Time will tell whether home games Jan. 7 against Loyola-Marymount and Jan. 9 against top-ranked Gonzaga, happen.

The Pilot women had four WCC games over eight days this week, including home games Jan. 2 against Pacific and Jan. 4 against St. Mary's.

The Portland State women, who had played one game prior to a Dec. 28 visit to Air Force, are slated to open Big Sky play with home games against Eastern Washington Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. The Viking men are slated to play at EWU on those dates.

Seahawks — Seattle (11-4) beat the Los Angeles Rams 20-9 Sunday, clinching the NFC West Division. They play at San Francisco, 1:25 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3 (FOX) in the regular-season finale.

Meanwhile, former Oregon star Justin Herbert threw his 28th touchdown of the season in Los Angeles Chargers' 19-16 win over Denver, setting the NFL record for rookie quarterbacks.

Winterhawks — The Carolina Hurricanes have signed the Portland Winterhawks' Seth Jarvis, their first-round NHL pick this year, to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Pac-12 football — Oregon State offensive lineman Nathan Eldridge, running back Jermar Jefferson and linebacker Avery Roberts were named to the Pac-12 all-conference first team.

Oregon defensive lineman Kayvon Thibodeaux and cornerback Mykael Wright were first-team selections and Ducks linebacker Noah Sewell was the freshman of the year for the conference on defense.

The second-team selections included Oregon center Alex Forsyth out of West Linn High and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, and Oregon State's redshirt freshman offensive lineman Joshua Gray.

Oregon State players earning honorable mention were: Champ Flemings, Jaydon Grant (West Linn High), Isaac Hodgins, Jesiah Irish, Nous Keobounnam (Centennial High), Teagan Quitoriano, Hamilcar Rashed Jr., Simon Sandberg, Omar Speights and Nahshon Wright.

Oregon players earning honorable mention were: Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, T.J. Bass, Travis Dye, Austin Faoliu, Jamal Hill, Johnny Johnson III, Isaac Slade-Matautia, and Sewell.

USC's Talanoa Hufanga from Crescent Valley High in Corvallis was the Pac-12 defensive player of the year. Other former Portland-area prep players to earn first-team recognition were Washington senior offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland (Jesuit), Washington senior defensive back Elijah Molden (West Linn), and UCLA senior defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa (David Douglas).

• Oregon State linebacker Rashed Jr. and defensive back Wright announced on social media that both plan to enter the NFL Draft and not return to OSU next season. Jefferson has also opted to head to the NFL.

College baseball — Oregon's Kenyon Yovan is a Collegiate Baseball preseason first-team All-American designated hitter. Oregon State right-handed pitcher Kevin Abel is a third-team Collegiate Baseball preseason All-American. Abel did not pitch in 2020.
