Portland women's basketball drops close contest to visiting San Diego; Oregon women to play Battle 4 Atlantis

College women's basketball — Playing its third game in five days, Portland fell 69-62 on Monday to visiting San Diego. The Pilots (9-7, 6-4 WCC) made a strong run in the third quarter to turn a 14-point deficit into a 54-50 lead early in the fourth quarter. But six San Diego steals down the stretch sealed the win for the Toreros (6-4, 3-2).

Alex Fowler had 21 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for Portland).

Haylee Andrews scored 13 points, passing 1,000 for her career.

Liana Kaitu'u had 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, many of them in the 16-2 third-quarter run that tied the game.

Ultimately, San Diego's 20 steals and Portland's 31 turnovers were too much to overcome.

• The Oregon women will be part of the first Battle 4 Atlantis women's basketball tournament, scheduled to take place Nov. 20-22 in the Bahamas. Other teams in the field are UConn, South Carolina, Buffalo, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Syracuse and South Florida. … Oregon fell to No. 12 in the AP poll this week after pausing activities and not playing at Utah or Colorado last week.
