Winterhawks beat Spokane
A short-handed goal from Reece Newkirk proved to be the difference as the Portland Winterhawks held off the Spokane Chiefs for a 4-3 Western Hockey League win on Sunday, March 21, at Accesso ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington.
Goals by Nick Cicek in the first period, Simon Knak in the second and Gabe Klassen early in the third had Portland ahead 3-0.
Newkirk's short-handed goal at 7:45 of the third period came just 18 seconds after Adam Beckman scored for Spokane.
It was the second short-handed goal of the game for the Winterhawks, who also scored while killing a penalty from Knak in the second period.
Goals from Mac Gross and Reed Jacobson pulled Spokane within 4-3 with 5:23 left, but the Hawks held on for their second win in as many nights.
Portland is 2-0-1-0 (five points) three games into a 24-game season.
Brock Gould made 30 saves for his first win as a member of the Winterhawks.
Portland was the designated home team on Sunday but will play an actual home game on at 5 p.m. Friday, March 26, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum (without fans) against Everett.
