SATURDAY, APRIL 3

Pro baseball

Mariners 4, Giants 0 — Five pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout as Seattle took the rubber match of the three-game season-opening series at T-Mobile Park. Mitch Hanniger and Ty France hit solo homers and Hanniger also doubled for Seattle, which had six extra-base hits and two singles. Mariners' starting pitcher Chris Flexen struck out six, walked two and allowed four hits over five innings to earn the win.

Sunday: No game.

Monday's game: White Sox at Mariners, 7:05 p.m.

College baseball

Utah 5, Oregon State 3 — At Corvallis, Jake Dukart doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Beavers but the Utes took the final game of a three-game Pac-12 series thanks to four unearned runs in the fifth inning.

Oregon 2-6, New Mexico State 1-1 — At PK Park, the Ducks got strong pitching from Cullen Kafka (12 strikeouts) and Brett Walker (13 strikeouts) in the non-conference double-header sweep that completed a four-game sweep of the Aggies. Oregon pitchers struck out 33 on the day, 20 in the second game.

Portland 3, Saint Mary's 0 — Left-hander Brad McVay pitched seven innings with eight strikeouts and five hits. Freshman Sam Brown went 3 for 4 with a home run for the Pilots (13-13, 6-3, WCC).

College softball

Oregon 4, Oregon State 3 — The Ducks held off the Beavers to take three of four games at Corvallis, including two of three that count in the Pac-12 standings.

Oregon's Brooke Yanez struck out 12 over 5.1 innings and Makenna Kliethermes retired the last five Beavers in order. The Ducks (26-2, 5-1 Pac-12) got a home run from Rachel Cid, who had two of their eight hits. Mya Felder delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the third for Oregon. OSU got solo home runs from Frankie Hammoude and Missy Nunes in the sixth inning to pull within 4-3. Bailey McLaughlin also homered for the Beavers (14-14, 3-6).

No. 3-ranked Oregon is scheduled to host No. 2 UCLA for four games starting Friday, April 9.

FRIDAY, APRIL 2

Pro baseball

Giants 6, Mariners 3 — The Mariners got a solid start from Yusei Kikuchi (six innings, 10 strikeouts, three earned runs) but the Giants scored three runs with two outs in the seventh off reliever Drew Steckenrider to build the lead that stood up. Donovan Solano went 3 for 5 with the go-ahead two-run double in the San Francisco seventh.

After four seasons with the L.A. Angels, Portland native (and Milwaukie High grad) Keynan Middleton pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his Mariners debut.

Saturday's game: Giants at Mariners, 6:10 p.m.

College baseball

Oregon State 17, Utah 3 — Jacob Melton hit three of Oregon State's five home runs, including a seventh-inning grand slam in the Beavers' win in Corvallis.

Oregon 8, New Mexico State 2 — Robert Ahlstrom pitched six solid innings and did not allow an earned run and the Ducks scored three times in the third and fourth inning in the nonleague win in Eugene.

St. Mary's 14, Portland 2 — The Pilots fell to 12-13, 5-3 in WCC play with the loss at Moraga, California.

College softball

Oregon State 8, Oregon 1 — In the Pac-12 contest at Corvallis, Beavers' pitcher Mariah Mazon limited the Ducks to three hits and struck out seven. She also had three hits and three RBIs.

Oregon 4, Oregon State 0 — In Friday's second game, which does not count in Pac-12 play, Oregon's Brooke Yanez pitched a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for the Ducks.

THURSDAY, APRIL 1

Pro baseball

Mariners 8, Giants 7 — Seattle opened its season with a walk-off win. A real walk-off. The Mariners drew three walks from Giants' pitcher Jose Alvarez in the bottom of the 10th to cap off a game they trailed 5-0 and 6-1. A six-run eighth inning, on three hits, three walks and a key SF error, rallied Seattle. The Ms had only five hits — the biggest a two-run single in the eighth inning from Dylan Moore (three RBIs) — but benefited from nine walks and a hit batsman.

Friday's game: Giants at Mariners, 7:10 p.m.

College baseball

Portland 4, Saint Mary's 3 — Ty Saunders' RBI single in the top of the 13th won it for the visiting Pilots.

Oregon State 4, Utah 3 — Jake Mulholland tied the Oregon State record with his 37th career save. Jake Dukart went 4 for 4 and the Beavers used a three-run fifth to top the visiting Utes.

Oregon 5, New Mexico State 0 — Four pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout for the No. 19 Ducks.

College softball

Oregon 2, Oregon State 0 — Brooke Yanez pitched a three-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts as No. 3-ranked Oregon beat Oregon State 2-0 in the opener of a four-game series at Corvallis. Haley Cruse hit a leadoff home run and scored an insurance run in the seventh for the Ducks (24-1, 4-0 Pac-12). Mariah Mazon struck out nine and had two of the hits for the Beavers (13-12, 2-5).

The series continues Friday with two games, the first of them a Pac-12 game starting at 2 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).
