Portland scores final three goals Saturday to beat Seattle in WHL hockey game at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Portland Winterhawks scored the final three goals and got solid goaltending from Dante Giannuzzi on Saturday, April 17, in a 3-1 Western Hockey League win over the Seattle Thunderbirds at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The game was the 13th of 24 in this abbreviated season and the win improves Portland to 6-4-3-0 for 15 points, five behind U.S. Division leader Everett. Seattle is 7-7-0-0 for 14 points.

Reece Newkirk and defensemen Nick Cicek and Brody Tallman scored the Portland goals.

Newkirk tied the score at 1-1 from alone in the crease on a power play at 15:41 of the second period.

Cicek gave Portland a 2-1 lead with a blueline blast 12 seconds into the third period.

Tallman's first WHL goal came from the first WHL assist for Luke Shelter 5:59 into the third period.

Giannuzzi made 28 saves as Seattle outshot Portland 29-21. The Hawks were 1 for 4 on the power play, the T-Birds 0 for 3.

Portland is at Everett at 4:05 p.m. Sunday.
