Diamond Beat: Hops win another series vs. Vancouver

SUNDAY, AUG. 8
Mariners 2, Yankees 0 — Seattle salvaged the final game of a four-game series at New York, behind the pitching of Yusei Kikuchi, who allowed four hits in five innings, and three relievers.
Seattle scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning.
The Mariners (59-54) return to T-Mobile Park to play Texas (Tuesday-Thursday) and Toronto (Friday-Sunday).
Hops 7, Canadians 5 — Tristin English hit a sacrifice fly and Andy Yerzy had an RBI single as Hillsboro scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to beat Vancouver at Ron Tonkin Field.
Yerzy also hit a solo homer, had three hits and drove in five runs. Luis De Los Santos and Zac Cook hit solo homers for Vancouver.
The Hops won four of the six games with Vancouver, and have won eight of 12 games against their Ron Tonkin Field co-inhabitant. They play again Aug. 24-29 and then Sept. 14-19.
Up next for the teams: Hillsboro (39-44) plays host to Eugene at Ron Tonkin Field, Tuesday-Sunday, Aug. 10-15; Vancouver (37-47) plays at Everett, Tuesday-Sunday, Aug. 10-15.
Elks 7, Pickles 6 — Portland (24-21) got swept at Bend in a West Coast League series, and now prepares for its final regular-season series at Port Angeles (Tuesday-Thursday).
Leo Mosby had two hits, a homer, four RBIs and a run scored for Portland. Daniel Garcia had four hits for Bend, and Omar Veloz homered.
SATURDAY, AUG. 7
Yankees 5, Mariners 4 — Aaron Judge and Rougned Odor homered as New York beat Seattle, and the Yankees go for the four-game sweep Sunday.
Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer for Seattle.
Hops 2, Canadians 1 — Brandon Pfaadt gave up two hits and one run while striking out 11 and walking two in seven innings as Hillsboro topped Vancouver at Ron Tonkin Field. A.J. Vukovich and Roman Ruiz had RBIs for the Hops.
Elks 6, Pickles 2 — Bend had 12 hits in the home win over Portland. Connor Henriques had an RBI triple for Portland and also scored a run.
Yankees 3, Mariners 2, 11 innings — Brett Gardner's single scored Joey Gallo in the bottom of the 11th inning as New York beat Seattle at Yankee Stadium.
Abraham Toro and J.P. Crawford had RBIs for Seattle. Marco Gonzales had a great outing, allowing three hits and no runs in 6 2/3 innings.
The Yankees used nine pitchers in a "bullpen game."
Hops 5, Canadians 3 — Hillsboro scored five runs from the sixth inning on in the win over Vancouver at Ron Tonkin Field.
Blaze Alexander hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Tristin English a solo shot in the eighth for Hillsboro.
Davis Schneider hit a solo homer and Zac Cook a two-run shot for Vancouver.
Elks 14, Pickles 9 — Host Bend had 15 hits to beat Portland.
The Pickles had 12 hits. Jake Morrow had three hits and two RBIs. Leo Mosby had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Carter Monda had two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
Yankees 5, Mariners 3 — Joey Gallo hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as New York rallied to win at Yankee Stadium. The homer was the third consecutive two-out hit off of Paul Sewald.
Kyle Seager and Jarred Kelenic each hit solo homers for Seattle.
Hops 5, Canadians 1 — Five Hillsboro pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Hops won as visitors at Ron Tonkin Field.
Hillsboro had 13 hits and eight Hops contributed hits, ed by a 3-for-4 night with a triple by Danny Oriente.
Portland 3, Bellingham 2 — The Pickles didn't want to say goodbye to Walker Stadium. Their final scheduled home game of 2021 went extra innings. And in appropriate fashion, Portland won it on a strikeout.
Evan Leibl's swinging third strike went to the backstop and Leo Mosby scored from third base with two outs to win it in the bottom of the 11th inning.
The win salvaged one of the three games against Bellingham. Portland remains tied with Ridgefield for the second-place playoff berth in the South Division of the West Coast League.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 4
Rays 4, Mariners 3 — Tampa Bay salvaged the final game of a three-game home series with Seattle.
Randy Arozarena had a double and a triple and two RBIs and Mike Zunino hit a solo homer for Tampa Bay. Mitch Haniger had three hits, including a triple, for Seattle.
It was Tampa Bay's first win in seven games against Seattle this season.
The Mariners now play a four-game series at New York Yankees.
Canadians 3, Hops 2 — Vancouver beat Hillsboro at Ron Tonkin Field, breaking a tie with a seventh-inning run scored on a wild pitch.
Davis Schneider hit a solo homer for Vancouver. Adam Kloffenstein and three relievers combined to give up four Hillsboro hits.
Eduardo Diaz hit a two-run homer for Hillsboro.
Bells 7, Pickles 3 — Bellingham won its second game in a row against Portland at Walker Stadium. Bennett Lee and Emilio Corona homered for the Bells. Cam Clayton homered for Portland.
TUESDAY, AUG. 3
Mariners 4, Rays 2 — Seattle took its second game in a row at Tampa Bay.
Yusei Kikuchi allowed six hits and two runs in six innings. Abraham Toro continued his fine hitting since joining the team, going 2-for-4 with a homer, an RBI and two runs scored. Jarred Kelenic also homered and Cal Raleigh drove in two runs.
Canadians 5, Hops 2 — At Ron Tonkin Field, Vancouver's Orelvis Martinez hit a two-run homer and CJ Van Eyk and four relievers combined to allow five hits in the win over Hillsboro.
Bellingham 18, Pickles 0 — The visiting team routed Portland at Walker Stadium. The Bells had 22 hits, including home runs by Cody Schrier, Cole Hinkelman and AJ Davis.
MONDAY, AUG. 2
Mariners 8, Rays 2 — Seattle had lost four of the past five games, but they started a series at Tampa Bay in winning fashion.
Ty France went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored; he hit a solo homer. The Mariners had 11 hits, backing starter Chris Flexen (10-5), who gave up seven hits and two runs while striking out six and walking two in 6 2/3 innings.
Seattle left 21 runners on base.
