BIG SKY FOOTBALL: Portland State benefits from five takeaways to top visiting Idaho State at Hillsboro Stadium.

Big picture: Portland State improves to 3-4 overall, 2-2 in Big Sky Conference play heading into its bye week. The Vikings were led by their defense, which came up with five takeaways that turned into 17 PSU points. The Bengals (1-5, 1-3) turned over the ball on their first three possessions, helping the Viks build a quick 17-0 lead. PSU put away the win with Beau Kelly touchdown catches on either side of halftime to lead 31-7. The Vikings covered 72 yards in seven plays and scored on a 10-yard Davis Alexander pass to Kelly 16 seconds before halftime. PSU's Tyreese Shakir intercepted an ISU pass on the first play of the third quarter at the Idaho State 40. Seven plays later, Alexander and Kelly hooked up on a 3-yard scoring pass.

Notable numbers: Portland State out-gained Idaho State 323-257 and had a balanced offense with 191 passing and 132 rushing. … PSU back Malik Walker had a strong outing, gaining 95 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown … Alexander was 17 of 29 for 179 yards and three touchdowns, beginning with a 44-yard catch and run by Nate Bennett to open the scoring. … Linebacker Nicholas Ah Sam made nine tackles (seven solo). … VJ Malo made two of Portland State's five sacks and forced a fumble.
