Starting lineup, program turnout has things looking up for PIL's Benson

Benson High should have a screenshot of it — after its totally unsung softball team beat South Albany 15-11 last Tuesday (the second day of spring sports competitions), the Techsters were ranked No. 1 in the state on the Oregon School Activities Association website.

"We were?" Benson coach Don Hopkins said, chuckling for several moments. "We were probably the only team that had played."

Well, yes, just about — but, as the optimistic Hopkins went on to say, playing Benson will be no laughing matter for opponents this season.

"We have the girls and the talent to compete," Hopkins said. "Benson is going to be somebody people aren't ready to see — we've gone from being a walkover to a team that will wake people up."
