PIL baseball coaches are on board with a new middle school program. It's expected to start in about two weeks, weather permitting, with doubleheaders on Saturdays and a three-month season of 20 games for each team.

The district is paying for uniforms, umpires and equipment, and the plan is to use high school fields and nearby parks. High school coaches will be directly involved, and the goal is to eventually have middle school softball, too.

Some PIL schools have good feeder systems through Junior Baseball, in particular, but a middle school program could help the likes of Jefferson and Roosevelt (who may combine on a team this year).
