Tech team and its veteran coaches don't let program's limitations slow them down

TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - Veteran coach Leon McKenzie's repeat run with Benson track and field is starting to reap a new crop of sprinters and athletes. The resurrection of Tech track and field continued last week, with freshman sprinter Micah Williams taking the PIL lead in his events and Benson clocking the third-fastest 4x100 relay time in 6A.

"We've been at the bottom of the barrel, for a lot of reasons, the last couple of years," longtime coach Leon McKenzie says, "but I've got a veteran staff, and everyone's been working hard since last summer, and these little babies are starting to mature — and they're hungry and passionate about track."

Benson is doing this with probably the worst facilities of any Class 6A team, and despite enrollment limitations imposed by the district in recent years, and with a young team — which has grown in numbers, though, from about 50 athletes to 150 (about 90 boys).

Under McKenzie, Benson isn't content to just run for fun, either.
