The PIL's recent foray into middle school does and doesn't help Benson, which draws students from around the city instead of in a specific area.

Track and field is the biggest middle school sport, but Tech's program of about 150 boys and girls has fewer than 10 athletes who ran in the middle-school program, coach Leon McKenzie says. "But at least it's orienting kids to track and field, and a lot of them are choosing to stay with it," McKenzie says, "so it's helping everybody with their numbers."

Benson's team has some performers who have come from other sports, such as Joseph Justice, a junior who played a couple of years of baseball and now is a key runner from 400 to 1,500 meters and had an 800 PR of 1:57.86 Saturday at Wilsonville.
