Marshall High athletics had a dedicated volunteer, friend, coach and mentor

"Just a great guy. He did anything and everything you needed," said Steve Walmer, who had Canton as his assistant softball coach for two decades at Marshall, and now coaches at Wilson.

"He became my right-hand man," said former Marshall athletic director Tim Biamont, choked with tears as he spoke at the memorial and tried to explain what Canton meant to him as a friend and colleague.

"A truly iconic individual in Southeast Portland," said Don Elwell, former boys basketball coach at Marshall.
