Brought to you by Lake Oswego's Mike Hall, Hasson Company Realtors - REAL ESTATE INSIDER - The Equifax breach and your home

Mike Hall, Hasson Company RealtorsThis breach could impact your ability to buy or sell a home even for cash. Take it from someone who knows the credit world intimately: If you're wondering whether to be concerned, the answer is "Yes."

Equifax, one of three nationwide credit-reporting bureaus, gathers and shares your credit data, including credit applications, pay history, and more. The breach put 143 million records, maybe yours, in the hands of wrong-doers.

First visit and find out if your information was exposed. If so, then enroll in the free year of credit monitoring Equifax has agreed to pay for affected consumers.

Check your credit report regularly for inaccuracies. This is free from each of the bureaus annually. Just visit or by calling 1-877-322-8228

You may also place a credit freeze, halting any application for new credit until you request that it be lifted. Each time you seek credit (new car, phone, credit card, etc.) you must temporarily un-freeze your credit. The inconvenience will be substantial. Also place a fraud-alert statement in your credit file stating that you may be a victim of ID theft.

File your taxes as soon as you have the tax information you need. The goal is to file before scammers can try to steal your tax refund.

Monitor your mail and all account statements carefully for suspicious activity.

This isn't a perfect plan, but these best practices will make you a harder target. Call me with questions!
