Vancouver man Gerald Sullivan, 68, arrested with BAC of 0.22% after crash, Portland Police say.

VIA PPB - Police say a wrong-way DUII crash on Interstate 205 inflicted minor injuries in Portland. The Portland Police Bureau says charges will be filed after an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed into another vehicle while driving the wrong way on Interstate 405.

Central Precinct officers responded to Interstate 405 near Southwest 4th Avenue around 12:49 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, following reports of a collision.

Police say 68-year-old Vancouver resident Gerald R. Sullivan was driving south in the northbound lanes when he crashed "nearly head on" while driving a Honda sedan.

Police say they found Sullivan inside the Honda and transported him by ambulance to a hospital, where his injuries were determined to be minor.

The other motorist and a passenger, both inside a Toyota SUV, also suffered minor injuries, police say.

Traffic Division authorites recorded Sullivan's blood-alcohol concentration at 0.22%, far above the 0.08% legal limit.

Police say Sullivan will be cited for driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. Officers don't know what ramp Sullivan used to access the interstate.

"Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers," police said. "In 2017, there were 10,874 people killed in drunk-driving crashes. To put it in perspective, that's equal to about 20 jumbo jets crashing, with no survivors."

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story misidentified the interstate where the crash occurred.
