Paper ranks Portland among top 10 haunted cities

Portland is one of the top 10 most haunted cities in the country, according to a list released Thursday by USA Today.

The article cites Portland’s so-called Shanghai Tunnels, a group of underground passageways that run below the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood in downtown Portland, linking several hotels and bars to the Willamette River waterfront. According to the legend, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the tunnels were used to kidnap men and smuggle them to ship captains in a process called "Shanghaiing."

While the myth of the tunnels continues to grow, thanks in part to television shows like the History Channel’s Cities of the Underworld, the validity of whether Shanghaiing actually occurred has been questioned by historians. Regardless, people can now schedule a tour of Portland's tunnels.

USA Today says visitors should make sure go to the McMenamins White Eagle Saloon & Rock 'n' Roll Hotel in North Portland, one of the historic hotels believed to be connected to the underground labyrinth.

Other cities that made the USA Today list include San Francisco, New Orleans and Baltimore.
