As many as 50 tomes stolen from area libraries

A Milwaukie man will soon be sentenced for stealing dozens of books from Lake Oswego and other area libraries.

A Clackamas County jury on May 31 found Billy Joe Davis II, 42, guilty in the theft of about 50 books from the Lake Oswego Public Library and other libraries around Portland.

The case began in April 2012, when Lake Oswego police learned of 50 books checked out from Clackamas County libraries that were never returned. The borrowed books were valued at $3,750, according to the city.

Police said an investigation revealed Davis had also taken books from libraries in Beaverton and Tigard along with Clackamas County and Multnomah County locations. According to police, the borrowed books were then sold at stores and online. A number of the missing books have since been recovered and are once again in circulation.

Davis also recently pleaded guilty to a theft charge in Multnomah County that emerged during the investigation, according to the city.

He is scheduled for sentencing in Clackamas County next month.
