by: KOIN LOCAL 6 - Hit-and-run victim Henry Schmidt A student at Lewis and Clark was walking his bike in a bike lane when he was hit by a car that didn’t stop. But a TriMet bus driver did and may have saved the young man’s life.

Henry Schmidt has a fractured spine and a lacerated spleen plus multiple broken bones from the accident that happened early Friday morning on SW Barbur Boulevard.

A TriMet bus driver saw Schmidt lying in the road, stopped and called 911.

At a news conference on Saturday, his mother, Cathi Sweet, said the car that hit him would show evidence of a crash, as they found shards of glass in his wounds and in his mouth.

Schmidt is a math and science major who commutes from where he works to the Burlingame area in Southwest Portland. He was on his way home from work when he was hit.

He is expected to recover.
