A suicidal woman and a two-vehicle crash are jamming traffic around the St. Johns Bridge Thursday afternoon.

Portland police closed the bridge at about 2:35 p.m. Sept. 12 after a woman climbed the railing on the west end of the structure. Officers with the Mobile Crisis Unit have tried for nearly two hours to talk the woman off the railing at the south side of the bridge.

In addition to closing the bridge lanes to all traffic, Northwest Bridge Road also was closed.

Several hours later, negotiators convinced the woman to climb down from the railing and be treated at a local hospital. The bridge was reopened at about 9 p.m.

At about 3:50 p.m., North Precinct officers responded a two-vehicle crash on Highway 30 under the St. Johns Bridge in which one person was seriously injured. The accident closed all lanes of Highway 30 for more than an hour.

The lanes were reopened after 5:30 p.m. The bridge remained closed.

The closures also meant that TriMet’s Line 16 buses were not serving the St. Johns area. Also, lines 4, 11, 44 and 75 buses were delayed in the St. Johns area due to the bridge closure.
