To all those Portlanders who braved the waters of the Willamette River last July 5, it wasn't for naught.

Guinness World Records just notified local folks that Portland now is the world record-holder for Most People in a Floating Line.

A group of 620 people floating on inner tubes joined hands on the river near downtown Portland, breaking the previous record of 542 set in Viareggio, Italy in 2008.

It took two efforts by the Human Access Project to break the record, says Will Levenson, director of the effort.

Among other activities in 2014, Levenson will be organizing the fourth-annual Big Float on the river on July 27.
