Two men make off with undisclosed amount of cash

Two unidentified gunmen robbed the Wilsonville branch of Chase bank Friday morning, in what police called an “aggressive” robbery.

According to Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Robert Wurpes, two suspects entered the Chase bank lobby at 8231 SW Wilsonville Road around 9:15 a.m. Friday. At least one of the two individuals brandished a handgun and both ordered customers and staff inside the bank to get on the ground.

Both suspects then jumped over the teller counter, grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene, despite the bank being across the street from the Wilsonville Police Station on Southwest Town Center Loop East. Police did not say if the suspects were on foot or in a vehicle, but Wurpes said investigators suspect the robbers took advantage of the proximity of Interstate 5 to make their escape.

“That’s something we’ve known,” Wurpes said, alluding to similar incidents in the Wilsonville area. “It’s a really good escape route. You get on the I-5 and go north or go south, and we believe that to be one of the factors in this type of robbery, but this one was a lot more aggressive than we’ve seen.”

Because of their disguises, police still have not released a description of the two suspects, Wurpes said.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said, “There’s not really much more right now. These guys were pretty much covered from head to toe.”

Investigators are continuing to review surveillance video of the robbery, Wurpes said, and also are looking into possible links with a similar robbery over the weekend in Portland. In that incident, two masked and armed men entered The Boom Boom Room on Southwest Barbur Boulevard on Sunday afternoon, demanded cash and then fled the scene.
