UPDATE: Closures delayed a week due to high-wind forecast

Motorists using Interstate 205 in northern Clackamas County should watch out for traffic closures over two upcoming weekends, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced.

With a $168.5 million budget largely from the Oregon Legislature, the Sunrise Jobs and Transportation Act project gets underway in earnest by constructing a new overpass over I-205 starting Friday, Jan. 17 at 11 p.m. Until Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7 a.m, the closure of northbound lanes of I-205 at Exit 13 will detour northbound traffic at 82nd Avenue towards Sunnyside Road and back onto I-205 at the Sunnyside Interchange at Exit 14. This detour will again be in effect from 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 until 7 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19. The ramp from 82nd Drive to I-205 northbound will remain open throughout.

Construction aims to address congestion and safety problems in the 212/224 highway corridors by constructing a new road from I-205 to 122nd Avenue.

Engineers calculate that the project will reduce delays along the highways and 82nd Drive by 980,000 hours annually when completed in summer 2016. Related projects coordinated by Clackamas County will add bike lanes and sidewalks along nearby Lawnfield Road, Industrial Way and Mather Road. County officials recently secured $18.5 million for the Tolbert Overpass of a Union Pacific Railroad for access to the industrial area from 82nd Drive. Plans are now being drawn up for overpass construction that will close Lawnfield Road’s crossing, said Mike Bezner, county transportation engineering manager.

“We’re all excited that things are moving forward to a much-improved transportation system that people have been waiting decades for,” Bezner said.

On Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and from 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, until 7 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, ODOT will close of southbound lanes of I-205 at Exit 14. Southbound traffic will be detoured at the Sunnyside interchange to I-205 and 82nd. The ramp from 82nd Drive to I-205 northbound will remain open.
