by: COURTESY OF MCSO - Joseph Johson was arrested Wednesday in connection with a Tuesday evening robbery outside a downtown building.Portland robbery detectives arrested Wednesday a 40-year-old man in connection with Tuesday evening’s shooting outside a downtown building.

Joseph Johnson was lodged in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said Johnson was the suspect in the Jan. 28 robbery of a 32-year-old man who lived in the same residential building near Southwest 10th Avenue and Columbia Street. Detectives said that Johnson confronted the victim at about 7:55 p.m. in a parking lot behind the building and demanded his property, then shot the victim once in the leg.

As Johnson ran from the scene, police said he shoved his handgun into the front of his waistband and accidentally shot himself in the testicles.

Johnson was later found by a Transit Police officer at Southwest Sixth Avenue and Mill Street as he was talking to a woman getting into her car. Johnson started to run but fell and was taken into custody.

The handgun in Johnson's possession was stolen in a car prowl in November 2013 in the Rose Quarter.

Johnson was treated for his injuries and released to be booked into jail. The victim is still recovering in the hospital from his gunshot wound.
