A highway memorial has been set up at shooting site

by: ISABEL GAUTSCHI - Clackamas County Weighmaster Grady Waxenfelter with killed near the intersection of Highway 224 and Amisigger Road on Thursday, Feb. 6.More than 800 people attended the funeral service for Estacada resident and church elder Grady Waxenfelter.

The service was held Saturday, Feb. 15, at Estacada First Baptist Church. It was preceded by a procession of trucks from various entities.

Waxenfelter was shot to death at Highway 224 and Amisigger Road the morning of Thursday, Feb. 6.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office has named Dirck Morgan White, 41, of Edgefield, Wash., as the only suspect in the murder.

Waxenfelter had served as a Clackamas County weighmaster since 2005.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Waxenfelter had reportedly pulled White, who was working as a delivery driver for O’Malley Brothers Trucking, over for hauling wood in a truck trailer without a license plate.

White allegedly shot and killed Waxenfelter.

During the funeral, military personnel honored Waxenfelter, who had served in the Army for about a decade.

Several relatives and friends spoke or had statements read during the service.

“I have tried many times to make sense of all this,” said Waxenfelter’s youngest daughter, Jeslyn. “And many times I’ve tried to deny his tragedy. But I’ve come to my senses that heaven needed a hero and it was my hero. My dad was the most amazing man.”

“I knew people liked my dad but it wasn’t until this awful tragedy I learned, indeed, everyone loves Grady,” said Waxenfelter’s daughter, Alissa Cole.

“I thank God for the memories we have: the pictures, the videos, the cards, the texts and the voicemails. But most of all, I miss him,” Cole continued. “There will forever be a void in my life. Shoes that will never be filled, a relationship that can never be replaced, future kids without their Grandpa.”

Mayor and Estacada First Baptist Church Lead Pastor Brent Dodrill said it was “a great celebration of Grady’s life” and that several federal and state dignitaries from the transportation department had been in attendance.
