Update: Ervin Jeff Dirnbaugh dies from injuries in hospital

A 30-year-old Portland man has died from injuries sustained Monday morning when police say he jumped from the roof of a five-story Old Town building.

Ervin Jeff Dirnbaugh was a suspect in a shooting on Sunday afternoon in Southeast Portland. East Precinct officers responded to the report of a shooting at a residence in the 12600 block of Southeast Market Street on at 2:52 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2012.

After they arrived, officers learned that Dirnbaugh got into an argument with this 32-year-old girlfriend and fired a shot at her inside the residence, threatened his 57-year-old father before leaving the residence. Neither Dirnbaugh's girlfriend or father was injured during the shooting.

The Domestic Violence Reduction Unit is continuing the investigation.

Police say that at about 6:04 a.m. Monday, Central Precinct officers spotted Dirnbaugh at Northwest Fourth Avenue and Everett Street. He ran from police into a nearby building when the officer got out of his car.

About 40 minutes later, as other officers set up a perimeter around the building between Northwest Davis to Everett streets and Fifth and Sixth avenues,Dirnbaugh jumped from the roof of the building and landed on Northwest Fifth Avenue, police say.

Streets in that area were closed during the police investigation.
