Southwest Portland-based nonprofit Neighborhood House will celebrate the grand opening of its new Children's Center this month.

The center is seen as the gateway to the new Stephens Creek Crossing affordable housing development in Hillsdale, which opened to residents in January.

More than 200 children are living in the development, about half of which are 10 years or younger.

About 90 of those preschoolers will attend the Neighborhood House's Head Start program based at the Children's Center.

Three Head Start classrooms will help transition children to kindergarten, and the center's Family Workshop will help parents develop skills to help their child succeed in school.

Home Forward, a partner, will hold employment skills education programs at new center.

A grand opening is set for 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 12; dignitaries including state Treasurer Ted Wheeler will be on hand.
