D’oh! “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening will attend Saturday evening’s screening of his father’s film retrospective at Portland’s Hollywood Theatre.

Selected Short Films of Homer Groening will be screened at the theater at 7 p.m. Jan. 17, as part of the Mid Century Oregon Genius series. Tickets and more information can be found on the Hollywood Theatre website,

Films include Homer Groening’s award-winning commercials, industrial films, public service announcements, educational films and experimental short films. This is the first retrospective of his work, featuring films provided by the Groening family.

Homer Groening was an advertising man who opened his own ad agency in Portland in 1958. Anne Richardson, publisher of “Oregon Movies, A to Z,” and director of Oregon Cartoon Institute, helped select the Homer Groening films for the retrospective.

The Mid Century Oregon Genius series was funded by the Kinsman Foundation and the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation. It highlights contributions to cinema by four Oregon film pioneers: James Blue, James Ivory, Harry Smith and Homer Groening.

Homer’s son, Matt Groening, the animator and creator of the long-running TV series “The Simpsons,” joins a post-film discussion panel on stage. The panel will be moderated by his sister Lisa Groening and features animator Bill Plympton, Homer Groening’s professional colleague Tom Shrader, and film critic and Groening friend Ted Mahar.

The Hollywood Theatre is a not-for-profit organization operating the historic Portland landmark at 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd.
