After a month of online voting, the Pacific University Boxers hold a healthy lead over the Portland Stags in the battle for "Portland’s Best Sports Logo.” But Portland Mayor Charlie Hales is not giving up on his hometown team, putting up a six-pack of craft Portland craft beer in a bet with Pete Truax, mayor of Forest Grove, where the Boxers reside.

“As a former Portland Parks Commissioner, how can I not back the mighty Stags? Ultimate Frisbee is fast-paced. It’s growing in popularity. And there’s no rule that says you can’t wear a beard — how much more Portland could it be,” Hales said Monday.

Truax, a Boxer alum, met Hales’ bet with a bottle of local pinot noir and raised him a bottle of saké from SakéOne Brewery. We are waiting on Hale’s reply.

Truax responded to Hales: “If he wants beards, just check out Harvey Clarke who was wearing beards in Forest Grove long before Portland was a city. A Boxer also is an animal with a rich and vivid history that is the namesake of dogs, Rebellions in China, pugilists, and underwear. Stag is a motion picture of very questionable literary merit.”

The friendly wagering was set up by the News-Times of Forest Grove, which is unabashedly backing the Boxers. Its sister paper, the Portland Tribune is trying to leverage Hale’s support to create a last-minute surge for the Stags. Voting closes at midnight Tuesday, Feb. 24. Go here to vote:

The Boxers are the surprise of the 32-team tournament, coming in as a fifth-seed and knocking off a series of foes, including the Portland Trailblazers.

The No. 2 Stags, a professional Ultimate Frisbee team, knocked off fellow 2-seed Hillsboro Hops by just 303 votes last week to set up this week’s final.
