Broadway Bridge closed to vehicles until Oct. 26
The Broadway Bridge that connects parts of east and west Portland is closed to all vehicles until Oct. 27.
The bridge closed at 7:00 a.m. Sunday for Multnomah County to complete repainting it. The county owns the bridge, although it also include a short portion of the Portland Streetcar Loop around the city core.
The closure will affect streetcars, buses and all other motor-vehicle traffic, but not bicyclists and pedestrians. It will allow work crews to install scaffolding for the final span that will be painted.
The county says closure will eliminate the need for multiple bridge closures at the end of the year. Crews will need to close the Broadway Bridge on several weekends next year to remove the scaffolding over the traffic lanes. The entire project is expected to wrap up at the end of March.
The Willamette River can still be crossed over the Steel, Burnside, Morrison and Hawthorne, and Tilikum Crossing bridges.
TriMets Holgate/Broadway bus route 17 will use the Steel Bridge during the closure. The Portland Streetcar will still serve both sides of the river, just not cross over the bridge. The Northwest Lovejoy ramp at the west end of the bridge will remain open for eastbound traffic to reach the Northwest Broadway ramp to Old Town and downtown.
