Caldera heads to White House

The Portland-based arts and environmental education nonprofit Caldera will receive a national award today, Nov. 17, from first lady Michelle Obama.

Just as Caldera prepares to celebrate 20 years, its after-school Youth Mentoring Program will receive the 2015 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. It is one of 12 community-based programs to receive the award out of a nominated pool of 285.

Obama will present the award to Caldera’s executive director and a student from Central Oregon in a ceremony at the White House, which will be live-streamed at 11:15 a.m., PST, at:

Summer readers, libraries awarded $15,000

The state-administered Oregon College Savings Plan gave away nearly $15,000 to winners of its summer reading program and their public libraries Nov. 12.

In Portland, prekindergartners Flynn Cruzen of the Hillsdale Multnomah County Library and Samuel Loh-Menendez of the Hollywood Multnomah County Library were among the 14 randomly selected winners who received $529 in a college savings account. The tax-advantaged accounts are typically referred to as 529 plans for the tax code section that allows them.

According to the Oregon State Library, 206,425 youth through age 18 signed up for this year’s summer reading program at public libraries throughout Oregon; collectively, they read 144,643 books. At least 68,735 achieved their reading goal and completed the 2015 summer reading program.

Expenses-paid archaeological field trips

The Oregon Archaeological Society, one of the oldest and largest archaeological groups in the country, announced a new grant program to help send kids to sites around the Pacific Northwest.

Teachers of public school kids in grades 3-12 will find a webpage full of ideas for possible trips, such as Columbia Hills State Park or the Lelooska Foundation Living History Program, at: Teachers also are encouraged to submit their own ideas for field trips.
