UPDATE: Pacific Power tells KOIN 6 News that outage was caused by equipment malfunction and power was restored by 3 p.m.

Approximately 2,400 customers were without power downtown after an outage that hit around noon.

According to KOIN 6 News, Pacific Power says the outage happened when a piece of equipment being upgraded malfunctioned. Power is not expected to be restored until 5 p.m.

The impacted area stetches from Southwest Park Avenue to I-405, and Burnside Street to Jefferson Street. It includes the Portland Art Museum and The Portland Clinic Downtown location.

The malfunction happened at the utility's north substation by the Fremont Bridge on the east side of the Willamette River. The system shut itself down to protect itself. Although notning was damaged, it cannot simply be switched back on. Instead, power must be restored block by block.
