Two shot early Saturday in Gresham
A man and a woman were injured in a very early Saturday morning shooting in Gresham.
The victims are identified John Summers, 32, of Portland, and Mary Whitmore, 47, of Gresham. They are recovering from their injuries at home.
No one was immediately arrested in the shooting.
According to Gresham police, the investigation began following reports of gunfire near Burnside Street and 199th Avenue around 12:24 a.m. on April 28. Police said a call also reported seeing a dark sedan chasing another car.
"I heard about seven or eight shots and the police immediately came and taped off the area. I had my TV on and I was going to retire for the evening and go to bed and all of a sudden I heard those shots, at first I wasn't sure if I was imagining It or not, but I thought 'No, that's a very distinctive sound,'" said a man who lives next door to the shooting scene who identified himself as Jeff.
Police found evidence of gunshots near an auto shop there, but no victims.
Then, minutes later, someone called from an apartment complex about three minutes away on Northwest 15th saying the victims were there. Police responded and found the victims.
"The cops got there early, that's why I wasn't really fearful," Jeff said. "Because they got there so quick in a matter of what I would say, minutes."
