Store at 100 NW 20th Place near Providence Park stadium robbed on Thursday, May 10, police say.

POLICE PHOTO - This surveillance image of the alleged robber of a local Fred Meyer was released to the media on Thursday, May 10.A man wielding a baseball bat and bug spray attempted to rob a local Fred Meyer — only to drop his cash and abscond with just a bottle of wine, police say.

Central Precinct officers responded to the incident around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 10 to the Fred Meyer store located at 100 Northwest 20th Place, just a few blocks from Providence Park stadium.

The man "threatened physical harm to employees" while holding the bat, according to a news release, and apparently squirted an employee with bug spray while demanding money.

Police say he was given an "undisclosed" amount of cash and continued to mouth threats until a quick-witted customer grabbed the bat out of the alleged robber's hands.

Police say the man rushed out of the check-out area, with the money hitting the floor during all the hubbub. Then the man apparently grabbed a bottle of wine and ran off, police say.

"Responding officers searched the neighborhood but did not locate anyone matching the suspect's description," a news release reports. "The suspect was described as a white male, in his early 30s, five feet ten inches tall, 160 pounds, with brown eyes and red hair and neatly trimmed facial hair."

No injuries were reported during the incident.
