The NYU State Impact Center selected the department of the two-year grant-funded position in December.

PORTLAND TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO - Steve NovickFormer City Commissioner Steve Novick has been appointed as a Legal

Fellow from the NYU State Impact Center at the Oregon Department Justice.

Novick worked as nearly 10 years as a trial and senior attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice representing the US Environmental Protection Agency before moving to Portland, where he became active in politics and was elected to the council in 2012. He was defeated by small business owner Chloe Eudaly in the November 2016 general election.

Although the position is funded through the center, Novick will work as an Oregon Special Assistant Attorney General on legal cases related to clean energy, climate change and the environment. His work will be overseen by the department.

"The progress Oregon has made over the last several decades to protect and preserve our environment seems to be under attack every day," Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said about the appointment. "By adding one additional attorney to our team we are able to grow our environmental work, and focus more on many of the environmental issues that are so important to Oregonians."

Asked for a comment by the Portland Tribune, Novick said, "To quote 'Bull Durham,' I'm just happy to be here and hope I can help the ballclub."

According to department, the center supports capacity-building within state attorney general offices through the hiring of a limited number of NYU Law Fellows with five to 10 years of experience in clean energy, climate change, and environmental issues as special assistant attorneys general (SAAGs). These SAAGs will be available for a two-year period to provide a supplemental, in-house resource to attorneys general and their senior staffs on clean energy, climate change and environmental matters of regional and national importance.

The department was selected by the center in December. You can learn more about the position at tinyurl.com/yd8m2but.
