Shooting follows response to disturbance near downtown university campus early Friday morning.

KOIN 6 NEWS - The scene of the officer-involved shooting early Friday, June 29.The family of Jason Washington, 45, has reportedly identified him as the man shot and killed by at least one Portland State University police officer early Friday morning.

The officers, Shawn McKenzie and James Dewey, have been placed on administrative leave as Portland police investigate the incident.

Cell phone video taken by witnesses show Washington had a gun during the incident and was shot after the officers ordered him to drop the weapon. Washingtom's gun may have fallen out of a holster during a struggle.

According to Portland police, at 1:30 a.m. on June 29, PSU Police Department officers were in the area of Southwest Sixth Avenue and College Street when they became aware of a disturbance near the Cheerful Tortoise, located at 1939 S.W. Sixth Ave. The PSU officers contacted the people believed to be involved in the disturbance. Shortly after contacting the people, the PSU officers broadcast that shots had been fired.

Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting with the police bureau's forensic evidence division, Multnomah County district attorney's office and the state medical examiner's office.

The incident will be reviewed by a Multnomah County grand jury, which is standard practice.
