It's the sixth consecutive time that the magazine's readers have handed PDX the honor. According to the magazine, reasons cited by people who voted for the top airport include the user-friendliness of the terminal, efficient and friendly security checkpoints, a good selection of food vendors, shops that offer local and affordable goods, convenient parking and a variety of entertainment options for people waiting for a flight.

Travel + Leisure readers also gave a nod to PDX travelers' unusual obsession with foot-on-carpeting selfies with the airport's old carpet (which has its own Facebook page).

Port of Portland officials credited the airport's employees for the honor. "The credit for this accomplishment goes to our Portland International Airport team — the more than 10,000 who always deliver the best travel experience you'll find anywhere," said Curtis Robinhold, Port of Portland executive director. "The caring spirit of our PDX team, served up with local restaurants and shops, gives PDX its much-loved heart and character, reflecting the very best our region offers."

About 18.8 million passengers move through the airport each year.

According to the Port of Portland, it's the 29th largest passenger airport and the 24th largest cargo airport in the nation. The airport generated more than 17,700 jobs in 2016, with about $1.1 billion in income and $4.9 billion in business revenue.

PDX's honor was announced Tuesday, July 10, as part of Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards 2018 readers' survey. In an online column, writer Sarah Bruning reported that magazine readers have gravitated toward airports with local flavors and vendors, instead of big terminals stuffed with a lot of national franchises. She called it a "strong sense of place."

"Many of the hubs our readers love most eschew big brands in favor of regional purveyors and hyper-local cult favorites," Bruning wrote.
