Two-week closure of Hillsboro MAX stations begins Saturday. Shuttles will run to Fair Complex.

PAMPLIN MEDIAS GROUP FILE PHOTO - TriMet's Hatfield Government Center MAX station in Hillsboro.Riders of MAX light rail through Hillsboro will need to plan a few extra minutes into their commutes this weekend.

Several Washington County MAX stations will close for maintenance starting Saturday, Oct. 13. Construction is expected to disrupt the line for more than two weeks.

Through Oct. 27, the Fair Complex MAX station will be the end of the line as crews install new switch machines, upgrade equipment at signals, replace surface tiles at four stations and repair roads near rail lines at three Hillsboro crossings.

TriMet says a dozen shuttle buses will serve interim stops near the four impacted stations — Washington at Southeast 12th Avenue, Tuality Hospital, Hillsboro Transit Center and the Hatfield Government Center.

"Our shuttle buses are going to be timed to their arrival at the Fair Complex Station," Kristina Babcock, director of bus and rail operations at TriMet, told this newspaper's news partner, KOIN 6 News.

Drivers through downtown Hillsboro will also be impacted. The westbound lane of Washington Street will close between Southwest Adams and South First Avenue.

TriMet said trips may take an extra 15 minutes for MAX riders who take the Blue Line.

Since mid-September, TriMet crews have been working on improvements at several Hillsboro MAX stops, replacing sections of rail to improving the track bed.

TriMet spokesman Tim Becker said the work is expected to make for smoother rides. Construction will continue through November.

Becker said the work is "one of the most complicated projects we've done yet" as part of Trimet's ongoing program to replace and update sections of track.
