Police investigating shooting on Springwater Corridor Trail
A man who may be homeless was reportedly shot during a confrontation on the Springwater Corridor Trail on Sunday morning.
The man who may have been shot was not immediately located. The man who reported shooting him is cooperating with the investigation and was not immediately identified, either.
Homeless people frequently camp along the trail, and some nearby residents and others have reported conrfontations with them in the past. The City of Portland has swept camps there in the past.
According to police, at 9:15 a.m. on Oct. 21, East Precinct officers responded to Southeast Lambert Street where it crosses the Springwater Corridor Trail on the report of a shooting.
When the officers arrived in the area, they spoke to the caller, who said that he was confronted by an unknown male on the trail. During the encounter, the caller said, he fired a shot at the unknown male in self defense.
According to the caller, the unknown male ran off towards a homeless camp. The caller believes he may have hit the unknown male, but officers have not located any evidence of anyone being injured.
The only description the caller was able to provide is that the unknown man is a white male.
The Gun Violence Response Team (GVRT) detectives is investigating the incident.
