Portland elementary teacher wins honors - and $25,000
A first-grade teacher at Southeast Portland's Whitman Elementary won $25,000 Monday morning, Dec. 3, for being an outstanding educator.
The recipient of the 2018 Milken Educator Award is Janet Do, who didn't expect it. "I'm so overwhelmed, shocked," she said. "It's unbelievable. I don't even have the words."
Do teaches countless numbers of students on a daily basis, but she said she's gotten a lot from the kids who enter her classroom. "Seeing their faces every day, taking the risks that they do every day in reading and writing, the self confidence they're growing with every day," she said.
The $25,000 is Do's to spend. The Milken Award is given to people entrusted by parents to develop their children's minds.
