New mobile phone application for iPhone, Android allows gamblers to scan lottery tickets.

COURTESY PHOTO - Oregon Lottery released this image of their new mobile smartphone application. Once upon a time, gamblers rushed out to check the local paper for the latest lottery numbers.

Now there's an app for that.

The Oregon Lottery has released a new mobile phone application that allows users to scan a variety of tickets, including Scratch-Its, to see if they've won anything big.

The smartphone app works for both Android phones and Apple iPhones, and also offers information about new Oregon Lottery games, promotions and the closest Lottery retailer.

And get this — downloading the app allows players to win packs of Scratch-Its for free.

"We are always looking for ways to make the Lottery more fun and convenient," Digital Marketing Manager Shad Barnes said. "This app is designed to make the play experience as fun and easy as we can."

Other features including notifying users about large jackpots, sponsored events and other updates.

There is also a built-in timer and budget calculator tool designed to prevent you from becoming addicted to gambling.

Lottery officials claim that the app verifies users' age to prevent minors from partaking.

"It was of the utmost importance (to) follow the Lottery's mission to increase our player base in a responsible and sustainable manner," Barnes said.
