Pedestrian killed downtown Friday is identified
The pedestrian struck and killed Friday morning in downtown Portland has been identified Lowell W. Gibson, 78, of Portland.
Preliminary information suggests that Gibson was crossing Southwest Park Avenue and using a crosswalk when the driver of a Chevrolet Traverse drove his vehicle in reverse and struck Gibson. The driver of the Traverse remained at the scene and was contacted by officers and members of the Portland Police Bureau's Traffic Division's Major Crash Team. The Chevrolet Traverse was seized as evidence.
The collision happened at about 7 a.m. on Jan. 4, as Gibson crossed Salmon Street in an unmarked crosswalk and was struck by a vehicle. The driver is cooperated with the investigation. No arrests or citations were immediately mode or issued.
The city's Major Crash Team is investigating the crash.
Southwest Salmon Street was closed between Ninth Avenue and Broadway during the investigation.
