Police believe Joseph Henry Coffin, 30, was under the influence of "an unknown substance" when he began shattering glass at Portland Fire Station 19 around 2:25 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10.

East Precinct officers responded to the station, 7301 E. Burnside St., and apparently saw Coffin "pacing" in front of the building. A witness warned police that Coffin was armed with a knife and a hatchet.

Police say Coffin sprinted away, but "gave up" and was taken into custody. One window was damaged at the station, and no injuries were reported, according to a news release.

Coffin faces a charge of second-degree criminal mischief.

He was charged with fourth-degree assault earlier this year, and attempted murder in 2015. PPB PHOTO - Portland Police say Joseph Coffin was armed with these weapons.
