Gabriel Bonham, 15, died due to a gunshot wound suffered at his family's home on Parrett Mountain.

SUBMITTED PHOTO - BonhamThe Newberg High School athletic program plans to honor a freshman football player in the coming weeks after his accidental death. Gabriel Bonham, 15, died on the night of Jan. 23 at his family's property on Parrett Mountain near Newberg.

Yamhill County District Attorney Brad Berry said Bonham was tending to a fire pit in the wooded area near his home when a firearm fell out of the holster on his hip and went off as it hit the ground. The bullet struck Bonham and he was pronounced dead on the scene by first-responders.

Bonham and his father would often spend time together at the fire pit several hundred yards from their residence. The weapon that accidentally fired and struck Bonham, according to Berry, was an "old-style, replica gun."

Deputies from the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene after medical personnel at approximately 9:16 p.m. on the night of Bonham's death.

Bonham was a student at Country Faith Christian Academy at the Grace Baptist Church in Newberg. He played for the freshman football team at NHS last season as well.
