He wasn't on the guest list, but the appearance of a provocative conservative protest leader at a weekend march for women has put Portland police's tactics back beneath the microscope.
Joey Gibson, leader of the Patriot Prayer movement, appeared at the Womxn's March on Sunday, March 3 in downtown Portland, according to many video accounts.
Activists posted one video that purports to show a police officer telling Gibson: "We're not doing this today, Joey."
"I'm not going to be here long — I'm going to be done in like 30 minutes," Gibson rapidly replies.
Videos posted by supporters and detractors of the failed political candidate showed a small team of yellow-uniformed Portland Police Bureau bike officers trailing Gibson and his coterie.
Others in the crowd appeared to taunt Gibson after recognizing him. Critics said police didn't respond after a scuffle broke out involving a person wearing a mask.
Leftists were quick to term the police presence an "escort," while conservatives argued that anti-fascists known as Antifa were trying to pick a fight. In many of the videos, the cyclist officers appear to be riding in between the opposing sides.
"Hey guys, can you walk over this way," an officer instructs pedestrians at one point, according to a video.
Police tactics in Portland are under renewed scrutiny after the revelation last month that a high-ranking member of the police bureau blurred the lines between professional and personal communication while discussing upcoming protests with Gibson.
Gibson and his associates appear to have been participating in "de-maskings" in recent heated encounters with Antifa. In an interview, Gibson told the Tribune in January that he thinks people who wear masks are scaring the community.
Police did not release news of any arrests or injuries during the otherwise peaceful Womxn's March. About 1,000 or 2,000 people attended.
The Tribune has reached out to Portland Police Bureau for comment, and we'll update this article if we hear back.

Cop tells Joey "we're not doing this today" and Joey responds w/ "I'll be done in like 30 minutes". Once again PPB becomes Joey's personal security detail and they take orders from him, not the other way around. pic.twitter.com/kpoo6WtpZA— Official Alt-Left (@Kherman112) March 4, 2019
