Police say Darrell Desrosiers was unlawfully producing marijuana extracts in Stark Street apartment.

MCSO PHOTO - Darrell DesrosiersPortland police say an unlawful and unlicensed concentrated marijuana lab triggered the explosion that rocked a Southeast Portland apartment complex late last month.

Darrell Homer Desrosiers, 47, has been arrested for felony first-degree arson related to the unlicensed manufacture of "cannabinoid extract," according to court records.

Portland Fire & Rescue rushed to a residential unit at St. Francis Park Apartments, 1177 S.E. Stark St., around 10:39 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, following reports of an explosion that "heavily damaged" a living unit.

According to a news release, Desrosiers suffered serious but not-life-threatening injuries during the explosion, and was rushed from the scene to Emanuel Medical Center for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

Arson investigators determined that the allegedly unlicensed operation was unlawfully using flammable liquid butane to manufacture heavily concentrated marijuana products.

Desrosiers told jailers he was living in the apartment with his girlfriend. He has been convicted of 24 felonies, 21 misdemeanors and has 26 parole violations on his record, according to court documents. He remains behind bars at the downtown jail at this time.

Officials say butane explosions can be deadly, and urge residents to contact authorities if they see evidence, such as piles of empty butane cannisters.

A similar explosion killed two adult men operating a marijuana lab out of a North Portland home on July 24, 2017.
