Southeast house fire claims life of Portland man
Portland Fire & Rescue say a man died during a house fire.
Crews responded to the home at 6609 S.E. Taggart St. around 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, April 20.
Firefighters found flames bursting through the home's front windows and a "large hole in the floor" just past the front door when they entered the structure.
Officials say the firefighters navigated around the dangerous hazard and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. However, crews also located the dead body of an adult man inside the home.
"Portland Fire Investigators responded to the scene and determined that the cause of the fire was careless smoking," according to a news release. "Portland Fire & Rescue extends our condolences to the family of the deceased man."
No other injuries were reported. Fire crews ask all residents to be prudent with lit cigarettes and to dispose of them carefully.
