Taxi hits and kills delivery driver in NE Portland
A 77-year-old delivery man was hit and killed by a taxi in Northeast Portland early Thursday morning.
Portland police said the victim was Larry D. Dill Sr. The taxi driver's name has not been released. The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Dills' death was the 19th fatal crash of the year in the city. Twelve people has been killed in crashes by this time in 2018.
According to police, at 12:56 a.m. on April 25, North Precinct officers responded to a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 6400 block of Northeast Columbia Boulevard. Medical personnel arrived just prior to responding officers and determined the pedestrian was deceased on scene.
The Traffic Division's Major Crash Team is investigating the crash.
Police say a delivery driver appears to have pulled his truck into the road, then returned to close a gate when he was struck by the taxi cab. The taxi driver had picked up a fare at the airport and was traveling west when the crash occurred.
Impairment and speed do not appear to be factors in this crash, police said. No arrests were made or citations issued at this time.
Columbia Boulevard was closed in both directions from Northeast 60th Avenues to Cully Boulevard for the investigation. Anyone with information about the crash should call traffic Investigator Phil Maynard, 503-823-2216.
