College board will appoint interim director to fill seat for Zone 5, as Valdez Bravo moves out of zone boundary

In the midst of an election for three board seats, Portland Community College will also appoint a new member to its board this summer.

That means that the college's board of directors could soon see up to four new directors. On May 21, voters in PCC's district will vote on three open board seats. Only one incumbent— Michael Sonnleitner in Zone 3—is running for re-election.

Last week, PCC also announced that its board is now accepting applications for an interim director to fill the Zone 5 seat, currently held by Valdez Bravo. The term begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2021. Bravo will be vacating his seat as he moves out of the service district area, making him ineligible to serve. Bravo was elected to the board in 2017.

"The reason I'm stepping down from the board is because my family and I have had a change of residence, moving outside the zone I represent," Bravo stated via email. "The move was unexpected in nature but is what is best for my family." Bravo

The outgoing director said he conferred with the college's legal counsel and the Oregon Community College Association, as well as the county elections office, to find out how long he could serve for, before stepping down.

"We learned I could serve on the board until June 30 of this year, and would then need to step down," Bravo noted. "Also, the board would need to declare the impending vacancy at a public board meeting, but in terms of timing with the board meeting calendar, this would fall after the election filing deadline."

Bravo said he "thoroughly enjoyed" his time on the board.

"It is such rewarding work and has enabled me to give back to the school that gave me my start.," Bravo noted. "I'm very grateful for the opportunity."

Zone 5 represents portions of west Portland, including the PCC Sylvania campus, and Beaverton.

The PCC board will review applicant submissions in late May and is expected to interview finalists the week of June 10. An interim director is slated to be appointed June 27.
