Ride local transit with Apple Wallet
Starting today, transit riders in the Portland-Vancouver region will be able to use their Apple iPhone and Apple Watch to ride TriMet, C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar.
In a first-in-the-nation deal, TriMet and C-Tran are partnering with Apple to add their fare system, Hop Fastpass, to Apple Wallet, allowing Apple phones and watches to be used for boardings.
"TriMet has long been a leader in the transit industry, focused on the customer experience and ways to simplify riding transit. Now with the Hop card in Apple Wallet, our riders and our region take a major leap forward in transit fare payment," said TriMet General Manager Doug Kelsey.
The service will be added to Chicago and New York City later this year. A version of it is also available in many other countries.
The Apple Pay Express Transit service is easier to use than TriMet's existing app that is being phased out by the end of the year. Riders just hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader found on MAX platforms, and in buses and streetcars. The do not have to wake or unlock the device, open an app or use Face ID or Touch ID.
"Apple Pay transforms everyday experiences and we're thrilled Portland-Vancouver residents will now be able to go quickly through their daily commute with just their iPhone and Apple Watch," said Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Internet Services
With Hop Fastpass in Apple Wallet, riders can continue to take advantage of all the benefits of Hop Fastpass, including the ability to earn a day pass or month pass, purchase Youth and Honored Citizen Fares and easily reload value with Apple Pay.
Residents who only occasionally ride public transportation or visitors who may only be in Portland for a few days can use Apple Pay Express Transit with a credit or debit card as an alternative option to Hop Fastpass.
Portland is first city in the world to launch Apple Pay Express Transit on iPhone and Apple Watch with both a transit fare card and credit and debit cards, offering local riders and visitors multiple ways to easily pay for trips.
To use the service, customers will need to update their iPhone to iOS 12.3 and their Apple Watch to watchOS 5.2.1 or later, so it's important they do that before their first ride.
To add a Hop Fastpass to Apple Wallet, download the Hop Fastpass app from the App store. Select "Add a Hop card" and follow the instructions. Once the card has been purchased, select "add to Apple Wallet."
