Wilson Pool slide closed after vandals set fire
One of the key features of the Wilson Pool in Southwest Portland will be absent this summer after vandals set it on fire in late April.
Portland Parks and Recreation officials said the waterslide was destroyed on Saturday, April 27. With the pool's June 18 opening date weeks away, staff worked to find parts to repair it.
Unfortunately, the slide is 22 years old and the model is no longer made. There are no manufacturers making replacement parts either, so it will have to be replaced. Parks spokesman Mark Ross said it will take at least six months to get a new slide.
The department said it's exploring options for a full replacement for summer 2020. Insurance will cover part of the cost.
"Thankfully, Wilson Pool has many other wonderful features — the lazy river, whirlpool, covered shallow water area, diving board, trained and dedicated staff, certified lifeguards, etc. for all to enjoy," Ross wrote.
All Portland's public pools will be open June 18 through August 25.
Anyone with information about who may have set the fire should contact Portland police.
